Messerschmitt cabin scooter
KR 202 Sport with four-stroke engine
The legend lives on
At first glance, the Messerschmitt cabin scooter from the 1950s and the one from the 21st century are hardly distinguishable. “A design of this quality and with this iconic character must be treated with the utmost respect!” emphasises the father of the new edition of the Messerschmitt cabin scooter, Joachim Adlfinger. His main focus was on improving the technology. A four-stroke engine was to replace the original two-stroke engine. Safety was to be increased by improving the chassis and body – but all this was not allowed to change the appearance of the design.
In order to obtain approval for German road traffic, the technicians had to take into account safety requirements for the replica of the Messerschmitt cabin scooter for the road approval of the 21st century – requirements that the team around the developers fulfilled down to the last detail! The German general importer 3PPP, together with TÜV NORD, TÜV Rheinland & GTÜ, then took care of the German approval. With its German registration, the KR-202 Sport is equal to any modern passenger car of German manufacture, yet it has the aura and driving pleasure of a classic. Since the KR 202 Sport is considered a trike in its road registration, more precisely L5e, the Messerschmitt cabin scooter may be driven by anyone with a Class 3 or Class B driver’s license.
On the exterior of the vehicle, you only notice the numerous technical improvements at second glance: LED lights front and rear, wider and larger tyres, a small antenna on the rear – that’s it!
However, the change becomes clear when entering the Messerschmitt KR-202 Sport: regardless of whether it is a retro cabin scooter as a convertible with a soft top or a Messerschmitt Roadster: the sheet metal planking of the original has given way to a solid, rigid body made of fibreglass-reinforced plastic. It envelops the driver and passenger like a protective cocoon and conveys a more valuable impression, also in terms of the on-board acoustics. The dashboards, seats, pedals and all other equipment features are deliberately retro-chic, but do not deny their roots in modern car and motorbike construction. Whether USB socket, air vents or the practical side trays – here the Messerschmit KR-202 Sport is streets ahead of its role model. Even a car radio with hands-free system is listed in the accessories, and that even makes sense, because the enjoyment of music or the telephone voice is hardly disturbed by wind noise or engine noise. This is made possible by the single-cylinder 125cc four-stroke engine with petrol injection. It is not only low-emission according to the EURO 5 standard! Its 5.4 KW or 7.3 hp also has no trouble with the unladen weight of only 220 kg and accelerates the KR-202 Sport dynamically to 90 km/h with a CVT automatic transmission.
The ride is slowed by hydraulic disc brakes on all three wheels. The true revelation, however, is revealed when you open the bonnet at the rear of the Replica and take a look at the technical details under the classic body: It rests on an extremely torsion-resistant hybrid chassis made of hot-dip galvanised steel and aluminium honeycombs from racing technology. The rear swing arm, i.e. the engine-transmission unit, is guided by two adjustable oil pressure dampers, just like the steering knuckles at the front. While the front tyres on chrome-plated steel rims (on request and for an extra charge also in aluminium) have the dimensions 100/80-10, the tyre at the rear has the considerably larger dimension 120/70-12. Dampers, chassis architecture, tyre dimensions and the powerful 4-stroke EURO 5 petrol engine give the retro cabin scooter driving characteristics that one could only dream of in the 1950s and which even today bring a big grin to the pilot’s face! By the way, the KR 202 is also available with an electric drive instead of a combustion engine, then as KR 202 E!
